Market Day: A Graphically Speaking Review

Words: Igor Glushkin

Market Day takes place in a Jewish shtetle in Eastern Europe of time past. Written and illustrated by James Sturm, Market Day is a terrific read that leaves us with a quiet thought and a powerful impression about how a man must confront the changing times in order to survive with the possibility of hope.

We meet Mendleman, a Jewish rug maker who is dreading his trip to the market to sell his wares. For the first time he must go without his wife, Rachel, who is currently pregnant, to sell his eight hand-crafted rugs.

"Dean Haspiel NYCC panel: TMI"

Pictures: Seth Kushner

This past Saturday at New York Comic-Con, GNYC's Christopher moderated a panel on Dean Haspiel in anticipation of the November release of IDW/Desperado's Graphic NYC Presents: Dean Haspiel The Early Years. Attended by Dean's cohorts and collaborators from past and present- Walter Simonson, Joan Hilty, Mike Cavallaro, Mike Hueston, and Jonathan Ames- we paid tribute to and roasted Dino in what Simonson referred to as "Dean Haspiel: TMI".

The talented Sonia Harris of Comic Book Resources was there and covered the panel. Check out more of Sonia's writing at her personal blog on comics. On display in her CBR column, "Committed," Sonia's writing style is smart and witty, and we hope to see more from her.

Stick around, and we'll have some huge GNYC news  in the near future...

CUBA: My Revolution exhibition and artist's talk.

Words & Picture: Seth Kushner

Entering the Kentler International Drawing Space in Red Hook, Brooklyn, one finds himself immediately face-to-face with the art of Dean Haspiel.   The exhibition is  called, CUBA: My Revolution, The Making of the Graphic Novel & Related Drawing by Inverna Lockpez & Dean Haspiel.

Several of Haspiel's original penciled pages from Cuba: My Revolution are displayed with the finished printed pages, the thumbnails and script pages.  The manner in which the various steps of the process are presented together gives a real insight into the way in which the book was constructed and in how comics are made, in general.
